The northern tip of the bay, called Punta de Mita, is taking shape as one of Mexico’s most upscale resort communities, with two of the most exclusive names in hospitality, Four Seasons and St. Regis (the latter opened in November 2008), and signature ocean-side golf courses, one by Jack Nicklaus another by Greg Norman.
The 1,500-acre spear-shaped Punta de Mita peninsula, surrounded by the Pacific on three sides, offers a varied coastline with miles of smooth, sandy beaches, rocky, shell-strewn stretches, and small coves. A shallow reef just off the coast offers ideal snorkeling and scuba diving.
Dining at the Four Seasons can make for a memorable meal. Enjoy modern Mexican cuisine at Ketsi, or opt for one of their specialty theme dinners, including Chili Night, when everything from the appetizers, Tequila Night and Vanilla Night.
You'll find several beachfronts eateries at Playa Andote, the popular beach for surfers and swimmers. A government tourism development agency has earmarked the stretch of coast north of Punta de Mita, known as Litibu, as the site of Mexico's next mega-resort. Beachfronts hotels, condominiums and golf courses are under construction.
